CASE STUDY | WEB DESIGN, BRANDING & PHOTOGRAPHY
As a logo had already been developed it was up to me to create a design that harmonised with the corporate colours and typeface.
This was a simple affair. The minimal content supplied meant there would be plenty of space to allow their information to breathe on the screen.
The company had just moved to new premises and were keen to disperse images of recently the converted spice warehouse throughout this otherwise uncluttered design.
Having explained that our design ethos dictates we will only use supportive, relevant images across our work, I suggested we captured shots that would also convey something about the company.
At this point we'd concluded that the main pages on the site would be Home, About Us, Process, Track Record, People and Contact Us, so my goal was to capture these themes within the building complex.
Upon befriending a couple of security guards here, I managed to get clearance to go up onto the 9th floor where the views of the main square below were perfect. With the Gherkin, London's most recent landmark and totemistic centre point of the City in the background, the shots from this vantage point there was certainly gave a sense of perspective and ambition with in the city.
Back on the ground I took shots from complex and unusual angles attempting where possible to find the frames that would project the concept of the page titles.
Once I'd spent a few hours shooting the complex I found the ideal places for the staff portraits.
The atrium roof, being slightly translucent, was a perfect soft box for these portraits, effectively removing the bags and wrinkles that harsher sunlight creates. It was agreed that portrait style should be relaxed, happy and approachable which makes for an enjoyable shoot. We made sure these were conducted quickly to avoid disruption to the staff's working day.
Upon reviewing the day's work, I was happy with the portraits yet felt the lack of bright sunlight and clear blue skies meant the architectural shots lacked dynamics without angular shadows these conditions would have produced and so proposed to return on a sunnier day.
A week later I went back via a walk along the Thames, shooting the cityscape as I went. By the time I got to the offices I was confident I had taken the photos that would appear on the site as the set back perspective on the subject matter cast a whole new light on the direction of the images.
Having honed the concepts of the six shots to appear on the website, we finished the 'Home' page with the Millennium bridge with the cityscape in the background. Semantically loaded, this image depicts a modern bridge to the City with plenty of traffic. The watermark style rendering of the image gives a very corporate feel.
For the 'About Us' page we chose another wider-angled cityscape shot from our archives. Again carefully chosen, the image depicts a busy Londonscape, replete with construction cranes, a London bus, the blue sky, St Pauls and the City. This shot says 'this is London at work' and again depicts LFA's marketplace and ethos in one simple image.
A shot of the clock in the courtyard headed the 'Process' page. With additional reflections of the clock face in the office window there is significant emphasis on the perception of time from different angles. In the foreground of the frame is a tree, it's leaves punctuate the LFA insignia suggesting an organic approach.
The 'Track Record' page was a composite image of several photos I took from the 9th floor and shows a selection of different figures moving across the courtyard in various different directions, supporting the page content well.
The 'People' page juxtaposes the wall of the Tower of London with the glass of the Gherkin and depicts a close bond between the old guard and the new school.
The 'Contact Us' page shows a simple image of the worker's bell in the courtyard. It's usage is pretty self explanatory.
