Joules is a tricky customer, though he'll tell you that himself.

Not that this is in anyway a disparaging remark. Far from it.

Working daily in a highly creative environment himself, Joules is open to exploring the nuances that improvisation throws up, not afraid of fusing style and keen to apply interesting textures to his music.

However, when it came to designing a site to promote his work and ethos, I felt we had to rein him in a bit and find ways to develop a style that adhered to a number of web basics regarding necessity, ergonomics, accessibility and information design.

We could have gone one of many ways here. Eclectic, eccentric and wild would have potentially alienated the wider demographic. Minimal may not have done enough to really convey his style and the input he has on recordings in the studio, so at this point I found myself with the happy rarity of pretty much a blank canvas.

I felt the style of his recently refurbished studio would help augment a design scheme and tell me something about the direction Joules had plans to take his business so we set about capturing some shots.

Given the new suave look in the studio, punctuated by classic instruments such as the Wurlitzer and Fender Rhodes, I felt strongly that the sleeve designs of the Blue Note label could be the influence to take this design forward.

A punchy mixture of classic and contemporary, these designs worked perfectly to support the content of the records. With Joules's passion for jazz and funk, it didn't take long for the idea to be approved, at which point we were flying.

Using the studio shots in creative ways to create backdrops for the text, the site came together very quickly from here.

Applying myspace and youtube media inserts to showcase the portfolio, these feed and update directly from the respective sites, scratching off the need to update the business site each time a new recording is completed.
